Set Break: When cells replicate, our chromosomes align and must do so PERFECTLY. How do they do it?

It turns out longer chromosomes have more problems: https://doi.org/10.1083/jcb.202310010

New research from Megan Chong et al at UC San Francisco watched "biorientation" and determined that longer chromosomes have a harder time reacting to tension forces that try to stabilize them

They used "laser ablation to perturb polar ejection forces" to study how these tension forces work

Set Break: Eyed needles may have started the great arc of human fashion

Ian Gilligan of U. Sydney is proposing that eyed needles are what humans invented to ADORN their clothing

Before needles, we had bone awls that were fine for making warm clothing. What about decorative clothing? We needed higher precision

Set Break: Mammatus clouds

Visible over New Jersey yesterday evening, often associated with nearby extreme weather

We don't really know how they form:

  • differential cloud warming and convective overturning?
  • Cooling due to "hydrometeor fallout" ??
  • Destabilization at cloud base due to melting????
  • Kelvin Helmholtz billows turned from points into lobes ????????

I took this picture!

Set Break: Deep sea creatures have special proteins that allow them to live so deep

UCSD scientists studied ctenophores -- comb jellies -- which are adapted to different depths

Some have proteins with strong negative curvature that doesn't work UNLESS water pressure is extreme

These creatures MUST stay deep underwater or their skins are not stable.

Set Break: We don't know how INTERMEDIATE black holes form (between 100-100,000 solar masses)

They might exist, but are bigger than supernovae remnants and smaller than supermassive black holes at galaxy centers

Merging smaller black holes doesn't happen frequently enough...

Formation in globular clusters doesn't seem feasible since black holes launch outward after about 500 solar masses...

But high density at the center of a cluster could form MASSIVE stars that become black holes eventually

https://phys.org/news/2024-06-nasa-astronauts-stay...

Boeing's Starliner is trying to take some of the load from SpaceX of transporting astronauts to the ISS

But it has some issues with propulsion that surfaced during docking at the ISS

The Starliner spacecraft on NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test approaches the International Space Station while orbiting 263 miles above Quebec, Canada, on June 6.

Bamboo is incredibly versatile, thrives in some soil that other plants don't like, and grows INCREDIBLY FAST

Dangerous in yards due to wild rhizome growth https://www.housedigest.com/1540516/planting-bambo...

Some companies are happy to PLANT or REMOVE bamboo for you! https://njbamboo.com/

You can buy bamboo online. Should you?? https://www.bamboogarden.com/bamboo/phyllostachys-...

good morning.
Dale Hazelton 7:26:03 AM
our brain cells just die. no second chance for them.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:34:24 AM
True! Then think how unimportant mitosis becomes for those guys. No need for biorientation, just sparking and thinking all their lives
Dale Hazelton 7:37:17 AM
'mitosis' seems like a word that should be in a noel coward song.

Yes! Clothing is such a huge part of human expression, it's interesting to think of its ancient history
Dale Hazelton 8:03:51 AM
think of how proud that first caveman was in his tee shirt with the tuxedo printed on it.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:04:58 AM
Prehistoric cringey shirts! Their cackling heard caves downwind
Dale Hazelton 8:08:37 AM
interested to hear about bamboo. it seems like it should be a great crop for fiber and pulp, but i don't know how much water it consumes, if any.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:12:03 AM
I don't know at all! It's so easy to grow.... too easy
Gary Ryan 8:30:56 AM
Thanks for the cloud info. I saw them last night and was just amazed. Got some photos too.
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:32:41 AM
Weren't they otherworldly?? We were astounded
Gary Ryan 8:34:14 AM
Absolutely. I can't even remember seeing them before
Richard of Rocky Hill 9:45:13 AM
@DJ AskTheQuestion Re: bamboo, when I worked a Princeton University day job at Guyot Hall, there was someone who used to park their bicycle inside the entryway -- and that bike had a bamboo frame with the modern components (gear and brake cables, pedal and steering assemblies, seat) mounted onto it. It seemed comparatble to carbon fiber in terms of light weight with sturdiness. Impressive! (Although it didn't cause me to trade up to bamboo LOL).
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:45:57 AM
Bamboo bike!! Just incredible. Thank you!
Matthew McInerney 9:50:59 AM
I have used bamboo to build structures to support plants in the garden (tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.). It is a wonderful renewable resource that is easy to lash together. My challenge has been its tendency to split if not dried properly. Do you know how to dry it for maximum strength? I should add that I don't support planting bamboo in the landscape.
Dale Hazelton 9:55:54 AM
i assume to properly dry it you would need a wood kiln.
Dale Hazelton 9:56:24 AM
....maybe lay it out on stickers and cover with a clear poly in the sun.
Richard of Rocky Hill 9:56:41 AM
@DJ AskTheQuestion Awesome Alas, I don't recall if I ever met the bamboo bike owner. Re: the astonishing growth speed of bambo you mentioned, my understanding is that bamboo (like corn) is a type of grass. There are a few bamboo stands on residential streets in the town of Princeton. (I forget where, sorry.)
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:58:46 AM
Thank you so much everyone for your insight and comments!!
Jacob Kitty 9:59:29 AM
I loved the bamboo facts! Could you do a segment on tumbleweeds sometime? Thanks!
DJ AskTheQuestion 10:00:01 AM
I think the way of drying is species dependent. But I've found that using fresh bamboo, cutting it right past the nodes so that it is enclosed, and letting it dry in-use works fine for most purposes.
DJ AskTheQuestion 10:00:09 AM
Cutting it doesn't seem to go very far
DJ AskTheQuestion 10:00:16 AM
Tumbleweeds!!! thank you!
h1ro-protagonist 10:00:24 AM
I'd also love to hear your fun facts on poison ivy!
