Set Break: New Chinese lander just landed on the dark side of the moon

Chang'e 6 landed in the South Pole-Aitken Basin, a critical area to understand for science!

One of the largest impact craters in the solar system, samples from the basin can tell us more about the origin of the moon than anywhere else

Set Break: We can capture carbon using thin layers of metal-organic frameworks - which we are learning to make AT VOLUME

We can "shear" the layers of MOF (MOF-525, Zr6O4(OH)4(TCPP-H2)3) onto a surface to make large surfaces that can absorb lots of carbon dioxide

Then you can add a bit of electrical current and the CO2 turns into CO, which we can actually sell and use

Set Break: The Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is melting via a new tidal mechanism we didn't understand until now

Thwaites is a bellwether for so much glacial melting, and it has terrible ocean-rising potential all on its own (25 cm higher oceans if the entire glacier collapsed)

https://thwaitesglacier.org/about/facts

Now we know that the tide can lift up the glacier by 4 to 20 inches and allow a rapid flow of warm seawater underneath, accelerating its melting

We learned this by satellite measurements taken multiple times a day to see the regular change

Set Break: The world's largest genome that we know of belongs to... a FERN!

There is a group of scientists at the Botanical Institute of Barcelona have been measuring plant genomes to understand how evolution works

Previously the Paris japonica, now we know that the Tmesipteris oblanceolata has 160 billion nucleobases, about 50 times more than humans

Maybe this is a biological limit? It took the team 14 years to outdo their previous best

Set Break: It's possible that worms helped drive an epic period of biological diversity!

It all comes because pyrite absorbs oxygen when it breaks down but releases oxygen as it is created

Maybe worms churned up just the right amount of pyrite to create more pyrite, leading to super high oxygen concentrations and LIFE

Set Break: PSA: Poison ivy should be washed off with soap and water as soon as possible; urushiol rash sets in in about 8 hours

Poison ivy, sumac, and oak all contain urushiol as toxicodendron plants

You need to wash urushiol off right away! And be careful if pets/clothing gets in contact with these plants!

Learn how to identify poison ivy to save yourself some pain:

Dale Hazelton 7:03:06 AM
good morning. new show for this timeslot?
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:04:07 AM
Yes, it's the first Monday of the summer schedule! Good morning all!
Dale Hazelton 7:27:20 AM
really relaxing stuff.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:28:52 AM
Helpful for the pace of starting the day, I hope!
𓀠 ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 𓀡 7:44:22 AM
How will the lander know whether the collected rocks are original moon rocks or fragments of a recent meteor?
Dale Hazelton 7:44:57 AM
i'm sure it's all about the minerals on the moon.
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:45:33 AM
The chemical composition would be entirely different! Like, there are so many details that we still need to learn, but the basic composition of the moon's surface, moon's interior, and asteroids/meteors/comments are essentially understood
DJ AskTheQuestion 7:46:18 AM
But let me get a better understanding and tell you about it! Welcome ǝʌɐꓷ

Good morning DJ ATQ, so glad to see you back on for the summer!
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:39:11 AM
Hi DSM., I'm thrilled to be here! Christening the workweek :)
Dale Hazelton 8:41:23 AM
i'd guess something you wouldn't expect, like some kind of worm.
DSM. 8:43:10 AM
I recently saw an article on this, so I won't spoil the surprise. But I was surprised!
DJ AskTheQuestion 8:45:28 AM
The answer is pretty unexpected!
Tango Whiskymok 8:52:16 AM
whoa new schedule . zoinks!
DSM. 8:56:37 AM

@ DSM. Or that latter-career song by the late Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame, "Selfish Jean"!
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:08:28 AM
Selfish Genes, forcing their replication on generations of unsuspecting leaves :( They're just following orders!
Richard in Rocky Hill 9:08:56 AM
@ DJ AskTheQuestion Or could the mega-genome of the little fern Tmesipteris oblanceolata be analogous to tiny fruit flies, which not only have a large genome but HUGE individual genes?
DSM. 9:10:20 AM
Morning Richard, Mok
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:10:23 AM
Great question, Richard! I don't think we know enough yet about the specifics -- it's always hard to do much with a report of exactly one number. But it could be related
Tango Whiskymok 9:12:33 AM
good morning everyone
Richard in Rocky Hill 9:13:24 AM
@ DJ AskTheQuestion Thanks, although a question from a merely semi-educated (but interested) science layperson. We'll follow this one with fascination in the days and years ahead, I'm sure.

Good morning DJ ATQ and all. Enjoying the music and science this morning. That Low was cool
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:39:38 AM
Glad you're here Rob :) and that you're enjoying the show!
Jamie 9:45:51 AM
Hey friend! Great to hear you on here :)
DSM. 9:45:51 AM
Thanks for the show today, intriguing as always.
Kradak 9:49:29 AM
Urishiol binds to skin protein. The itching comes from your immune system not recognizing the modified protein as human. It makes you attack yourself!
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:53:36 AM
Kradak what good insight! Thank you for sharing. I went more in the public-service direction with that one but the science is cool if painful
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:53:44 AM
Nice to see you Jamie :)
Richard in Rocky Hill 9:54:37 AM
@ DJ AskTheQuestion One more important thing re: poison ivy -- good, I hope! -- is that contrary to common fear, the fluid from poison ivy skin blisters does _not_ contain and transmit the plants irritating chemical. So if your blisters burst unnoticed and you touch another part of your body, fortunately the skin infection won't spread. Is that accurate?
DJ AskTheQuestion 9:55:39 AM
Based on my limited understanding, that sounds true, Richard!
Richard in Rocky Hill 9:59:30 AM
@ DJ AskTheQuestion Thanks for the poison ivy public service info - v. important -- and all the music -- V.V. good!!
DJ AskTheQuestion 10:00:14 AM
So wonderful to be back to regular WPRB service :) Thank you everyone for joining today!
