Christine 𓅓 12:00:39 PM
It's that time again...Hi, Jerry!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:00:57 PM
Hi Christine, lots of percussion for you in this first hour!

The Queen of Icons! How do you do that so fast?
Christine 𓅓 12:03:18 PM
I do love percussion 🪘 🥁 Haha, I had those space-y icons in my recently used emojis list.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:56 PM
Ahh, describing the music you like!
Christine 𓅓 12:11:03 PM
This is a happening jazz club. And no one asked me to pay a cover charge! 🍸 🎶

More free shows at Princeton tomorrow evening
Brian D 12:15:01 PM
Off to a great start on this fine Friday!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:15:22 PM
Hi Brian, glad you are enjoying the Ra!
Russell Woessner 12:19:01 PM
Here’s the info about the free concerts tomorrow at Princeton: https://music.princeton.edu/event/jazz-small-groups-1-and-z/
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:20:41 PM
Why thank you Russ! The real story on action news is... how many times did you record the arkestra or interview Ra?
Russell Woessner 12:21:09 PM
I love the sound of Ra in the afternoon.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:21:30 PM
This CD is damn good
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:21:58 PM
...and yes, it is healthful and goes with lunch.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:23:46 PM
Russ, don't be shy about your work with Ra.
Christine 𓅓 12:24:11 PM
Hi Brian D, Russell & all 👋 Thanks for the link, Russell.
Russell Woessner 12:24:34 PM
I interviewed Mr. Ra twice and recorded the Arkestra once, all back in the 88.9 days. Attended too many performances to count.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:25:29 PM
Do we know where the interviews are?
Brian D 12:25:36 PM
So... No outer space recordings then?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:27:39 PM
Russ DID do his interview with Ra while on Saturn.
Russell Woessner 12:28:29 PM
The interviews are on YouTube. The recording was released on Saturn (both the label and the planet). So, yes, outer space ways recordings!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:29:05 PM
I had no idea they were on YouTube!!!!!
Russell Woessner 12:31:38 PM
Marshall Allen is celebrating his 100th birthday later this month: https://www.arsnovaworkshop.org/programs/the-sun-ra-arkestra-featuring-marshall-allen/
Russell Woessner 12:37:16 PM
Hard to believe that this Chicago concert was almost 50 years ago. It is like traveling back in time!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:38:04 PM
It really is, old timer. We saw many of the gigs of this era! This is particularly good, don't you think?
Russell Woessner 12:41:00 PM
An excellent performance and recording!
Russell Woessner 12:45:36 PM
Jerry is one of the foremost Ra experts on this or any other planet. He released many wonderful recordings by Ra and the Arkestra on Evidence Records. And sold Ra releases with hand drawn covers by the Arkestra at his store, 3rd Street no need to be modest about those accJazz.
Russell Woessner 12:46:22 PM
No need to modest about those accomplishments, sir!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:46:23 PM
Haha, thank you Russ for that endorsement.
Christine 𓅓 12:50:27 PM
👏 👏 👏
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:51:55 PM
Christine, it's Russ and my Mutual Admiration Society
Christine 𓅓 12:54:33 PM
And I'm here for it!
Russell Woessner 12:54:37 PM
Time to start marching through the audience!
Maria Enrica Buddha 12:56:09 PM
I'm marching as we speak. I'm wearing a see-quin costume in space.
Russell Woessner 12:56:38 PM
The first time I saw Ra and the Arkestra was on a bill with Ella Fitzgerald!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:56:47 PM
Hi Maria, Yay!!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:57:42 PM
Your cosmic presence has brought light to the world!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:58:00 PM
Russ, where or how was that?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:58:36 PM
Maria is outside marching around the club
Christine 𓅓 1:01:39 PM
I want one of those glittering Arkestra headdresses!

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:02:54 PM
Thank you!
Brian D 1:12:12 PM
Will C no way! Excellent
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:15:39 PM
Will C for free in Stockton! He's the greatest!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:15:50 PM
So is Doug!
Russell Woessner 1:24:33 PM
It was an all day concert at Yankee Stadium that George Wein did as a tribute to Louis Armstrong on July 4, 1972. Many performers, including Ella and Ra.
Brian D 1:24:55 PM
Was just listening to David "Dawg" Grisman's version of Minor Swing yesterday from Hot Dawg (1979) lp. One of the many times he played that.
Brian D 1:26:07 PM
All star quintet lineup that year. Tony Rice, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips and Dawg.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:26:28 PM
Thanks, Brian. I will have to listen to that!
Brian D 1:27:26 PM
Grisman puts out quality releases. Digital era now especially. Very dedicated to good sound. Dawg 90 is another great one (11-12 years later).
Brian D 1:28:26 PM
Good biz, does his own Acoustic Disc music label. Very important to have control over your product.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:28:52 PM
Thanks, Brian. Noted. I don't have Dawg 90 and will get
Brian D 1:30:05 PM
Hot Dawg has these great double mandolin harmonies moments. And I believe some tracks have triple harmony w/fiddle, mando and mando.
Brian D 1:33:36 PM
Used to have those 2 lps recorded on a Maxell tape back to back. First intro to the Dawg world (save for bootlegs of Great American String Band as well as Old & In The Way). Grisman always does his own thing. Dips toes in many waters. Sometimes goes back to traditional Bluegrass too.
Brian D 1:39:56 PM
Like the effects on this one at 1:39 pm
Brian D 1:40:20 PM
Ahhh Meshell N. This release on my list
Christine 𓅓 1:40:53 PM
Loving this 💯
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:40:54 PM
Meshell Ndegeocello, inspired by the Ra. Good taste, Brian. This is a killer album!
Haha, Bad joke! 1:41:09 PM
Good Afternoon!
Brian D 1:41:09 PM
Great bass playa
Maria Enrica Buddha 1:41:12 PM
Dawgnet is now https://acousticdisc.com/ I think
Brian D 1:42:28 PM
Yep Maria! Just purchased "Acoustic America" from the site the other day. Great release that combines many instruments, many musicians.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:42:34 PM
Good afternoon, Haha!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:43:56 PM
Thanks for joining!
Brian D 1:44:39 PM
Seriously considering going out to that Will C thing tonight. Just looked up that place and saw 2 people I know played there this morning!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:45:26 PM
apparently they have food and the owner of the place is an old friend of Will's. He'd love to see you!
Maria Enrica Buddha 1:48:24 PM
My friend saw Grisman / Rowan Earth Opera in Asbury Park nineteen sixty something, they opened for the Doors. He was in Vietnam and sometimes prone to illusions. Looking forward to this upcoming Doors live to see if I can conjure a feeling.
Brian D 1:49:39 PM
Used to have this Doors Sweden release on cassette back in the day. Great "bootleg". FM radio broadcast in Europe I believe. Jim gets wild and crazy during the Five to One breakdown spoken word part ha.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:49:45 PM
Maria, I promise you will. Just hang out and don't mulltitask
Maria Enrica Buddha 1:50:09 PM
..but if this is Meshell Ndegeocello.. it lifts things up.
Brian D 1:50:21 PM
Been bouncing around the tape trading world and then internet digital world for decades. Glad to see they are cleaning it up and releasing it
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:50:49 PM
Yes, this was a famous bootleg, absolutely. It has been mixed from the original tapes by Bruce Botnick.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:51:15 PM
currently this is Angela Sanchez
Maria Enrica Buddha 1:52:34 PM
ahhh .. playlist delay I'm dialing in from Spain
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:16 PM
Are you living there or just visiting?
Maria Enrica Buddha 1:53:54 PM
I travel the space ways a lot.
Liana Gordon Kahn (1) 1:57:17 PM

Russell Woessner 2:00:34 PM

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:01:05 PM

Joshua Kahn 2:01:05 PM

Joshua Kahn 2:01:16 PM

Liana Gordon Kahn (1) 2:01:21 PM

Joshua Kahn 2:01:45 PM
Do Jr. and Ralph like the Doors?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:01:52 PM
This is a brand new "Record Store Day" release of an old Doors bootleg, remixed.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:02:18 PM
Ralph is sleeping, Jr. is exciting and licking my leg
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:03:33 PM
excited not exciting!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:04:05 PM
Thanks for tuning in while at work!
Brian D 2:04:34 PM
go along home and wait,..... Headphones on the kids!
Terry Kelso 2:04:46 PM
hi all
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:04:58 PM
This track was edited by me to prevent being removed from the air!
Brian D 2:05:12 PM
HA... they edited out the "go out in the car with these people and GETTTT FFFFFFFDDDD UPPP!!!!"
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:05:20 PM
Hi Bruce, thanks for tuning in!
Brian D 2:06:00 PM
Well I am glad many get to hear and purchase this but... they really made the sound harsh. Especially Jim's vocals. Distorted and trebly. The good ol cassette was better and bassier in my memory
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:06:35 PM
Brian D, you are correct about the edit
Brian D 2:07:40 PM
Ya Jim really growled the edited line and emphasized it! I remember all the little details on this tape... wow... the intro w/the tuning up. Ray's background vocals here & there (I think Ray gets a full lead vocal on one track on this show...)
Terry Kelso 2:07:59 PM
3 songs from this show were only played once. love street wild child and your lost little girl
Brian D 2:08:15 PM
teeth are white white white
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:09:02 PM
Bruce, they were only played live once in their touring history? Wow!
Terry Kelso 2:09:37 PM
when over there on the 13th jim ate 2 grams of hash and missed the show on the 15th, raythey played tho and ray did all the vocals
Terry Kelso 2:09:44 PM
yes
Terry Kelso 2:10:00 PM
in 68 yes
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:13 PM
Incredible information!
Terry Kelso 2:14:48 PM
3 live shows recenty released= the matrix 67. berkeley 1970 and this , only 1 snd show left. that vancover 70, a very slow long show with many problems with the band
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:15:22 PM
Bruce, the band's sound or performance?
Maria Enrica Buddha 2:16:36 PM
Spectacular musicians communications.
Terry Kelso 2:16:55 PM
they toured with the airplane to bad no one at bmg have the sense to issue that show at the same venue.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:17:39 PM
That would have been tremendous
Maria Enrica Buddha 2:17:42 PM
They appear to actually listening to each other. Dynamics rare these days would be an opinion.
Terry Kelso 2:17:51 PM
the band are ok but the long strech during songs is the problem
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:18:16 PM
Agreed, jazz-like communication
Terry Kelso 2:18:40 PM
between up to to 8 min
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:19:33 PM

I hear you, Maria!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:28:05 PM
Bruce, I had to edit Light My Fire also. Was it an argument with someone in the audience?
Maria Enrica Buddha 2:30:53 PM
Amazing mix. Thanks for presenting this.
Terry Kelso 2:31:43 PM
the stage were annoyed at jim for putting the mike stand at his waist and pointing at the audience, not sure who the arguement was aimed at
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:32:10 PM
Haha
Terry Kelso 2:32:48 PM
he did this at all the euro shows with the audience yelling in to it,
Terry Kelso 2:36:20 PM
after la women they had no record label, what would of happend if jim came back from paris alive.
Maria Enrica Buddha 2:38:48 PM
The drums and keyboard have a special chemistry I think.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:40:18 PM
Good comments, Maria. I think we listen to this music with different ears now
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:40:33 PM
An Eleanor Rigby reference just now
Terry Kelso 2:44:29 PM
maria i think that ray and robbie have a bill evans/jim hall interplay feel
Terry Kelso 2:45:37 PM
the intro to the unknown soldier is monks straight no chaser
Bud Burroughs 2:47:02 PM
Cool live recordings to bookend the show today, Jerry! I definitely need to pick up that Sun Ra record.
Bud Burroughs 2:47:40 PM
I've never been a huge Doors fan, but this show has a great vibe
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:48:49 PM
Hey Bud! I hope you do, a really fabulous set/sets. Thanks for listening, Bud!

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:52:13 PM
Thank you, Maria! I loved your comments, thought the same. Continue to enjoy yourself in Spain!
Christine 𓅓 2:53:09 PM
We traveled the space ways, then delved into a string of new jazz gems, and now we find ourselves in a mystical desert. 🏜 🪷 What a trip since 12:00.
Christine 𓅓 2:53:37 PM
Thanks, Jerry! Take care, everybody
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:54:16 PM
Thanks very much, Christine. Have another great weekend!
ROFFLESTOMP 2:55:13 PM
Hi Jerry, great show! I've never been a big Doors fan either, but this is as great a piece from that era as it gets. imho Thanks for the tunes sir!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:56:24 PM
