Oh, I didn't really realize there was a cover to this John Congos song. I remember the original on the radio waaaay back in the 70s and it was and still is AWESOME
Colin 8:15:49 PM
i was a little while back on DBTF when I learned that a favorite song of mine was a cover.
Dana K (host) 8:15:56 PM
Considered the first song to feature a sample!
Tyler Blaetz 8:16:10 PM
This shit is hard
Colin 8:16:27 PM

Alex from Media 8:48:49 PM
How can you be so young DanaK when your taste runs the same as all the grizzled late 70s NYC club scenesters?
pledge.Francis.Commie 8:48:49 PM
I really want to listen to this but I also really need to work on my own show!!
pledge.Francis.Commie 8:49:18 PM
I do need to make dinner also and that I can listen to the radio during!

Liz Bot (1) 8:52:03 PM
Oof! I finally got back in! Spinitron server error for the past 40 minutes locked me out of the chat
Dana K (host) 8:52:25 PM
This is the most annoying time to have that error!
ESO! 8:52:28 PM
nooooooo!
ESO! 8:52:44 PM
i have had that happen, too!
Ossy 8:53:04 PM
Totally scary also!!!!
Alan Pasicznyk 8:53:06 PM
@ ESO: Not a bad typo tho, I heard a PRB announce that the merch includes "Dino Shorts" instead o shirts LOLOL!
Liz Bot (1) 8:54:36 PM
@Dana K / Eso - Yeah, it’s driving me nuts! Gave me that error a few times earlier in the drive, but the other times it was a quick fix of just restarting. This time that didn’t cut it. I had to log in through FB.
Alan Pasicznyk 8:55:08 PM
Lizbot: Had trouble with google, so I half sign into Facebook, give no pwd then try google, works so far..
Ossy 8:55:23 PM
Never knew there was an original version of Girls Wanna Have Fun!!
ESO! 8:57:07 PM
i know cool, right, os?
Ossy 8:57:54 PM
Like Cyndi's 80s cute own!
Liz Bot (1) 8:57:59 PM
@Alan Pasicznyk - huh…dang! Wish I’d seen yr trick sooner! Im catching up on the chat now and just saw that. I really didn’t want to start using FB to get into the chat, but I had to give up on the google route tonight!
Ossy 8:58:10 PM
And they have a namesake 80s movie of the song
Liz Bot (1) 8:59:47 PM
Always love to hear Brinsley Schwarz “What’s So Funny…”
Alex from Media 9:00:45 PM
When you donate during a show, does that count as cred with the programming? Cause I gave during your shows but think Jerry Gordon and Marvin Rosen deserve a shout too but I'm not in a position to give during their shows.
Liz Bot (1) 9:00:58 PM
I definitely prefer the Robert Wyatt cover of Shipbuilding, but I don’t know if that’s the more famous one
Colin 9:01:13 PM
i only ever heard (and quite enjoy) the Tiffany version.
Alan Pasicznyk 9:02:19 PM
@ Alex: All these DJ's are cool about the fact that the $$$ all goes to the same place...
ESO! 9:02:27 PM
hey colin, me, too!
pledge.Francis.Commie 9:02:29 PM
I think shipbuilding was actually released first by Robert Wyatt. Costello wrote the lyrics and I think recorded it but everyone involved agreed that Wyatt's version was the one to release.
pledge.Francis.Commie 9:02:55 PM
And it was initially written for Wyatt. It's a little confusing
Dana K (host) 9:03:16 PM
It gets a little hairy when you deal with people who write songs for others
Alex from Media 9:03:21 PM
@ Alan. Thanks. I'm soothed by your answer.
Colin 9:04:56 PM
i was actually just wondering, is that a sax or kazoo?
Liz Bot (1) 9:05:02 PM
Yeah, Costello def recorded it. Another weird one is Hey Jude, since technically Wilson Pickett’s cover came out before The Beatles’ original and was very successful in the U.S.
Tyler Blaetz 9:05:20 PM
OHHHH
Alan Pasicznyk 9:05:30 PM
Crazy here but When google doesn't work and gives Error 400, immediately click on FB, then don't sign in but hit the FB "X" and then you're good in chat...whew!!!
Dana K (host) 9:06:00 PM
The They Might Be Giants version of this is well known among watchers of Tiny Toons
Alex from Media 9:06:13 PM
I wonder if there's enough material to do a show on hits written by staff songwriters who became stars....
Liz Bot (1) 9:07:35 PM
@Alex from Media - So many Carole King songs come to mind
Dana K (host) 9:07:46 PM
This is one!

Alex from Media 9:10:18 PM
@ DanaK That was a gotcha. Had to look it up, Carole King A-gain!
Colin 9:10:28 PM
omg, this is a fun bunch of tunes! i'm bopping over here.
Ossy 9:11:22 PM
Earl Jean I'm Into Something Good is cute
Ossy 9:11:53 PM
And the next song after, almost thought of rapper Lil Bow Wow, lmao
Alan PaidUpNyk 9:12:19 PM
....and I'm back, google tried to censor me LOLOL!!!!!!
Liz Bot (1) 9:12:25 PM
@ Rob from merry land of pledges 🦅 - Don’t know if you’re still here, I was locked outta the chat when you were talking birds earlier here, but I there is a school down the street from me where the chimney swifts gather in murmuration-like formations and dive around the roof and it’s an entertaining way to spend the dusk!
Alan PaidUpNyk 9:13:45 PM

Rob from Maryland2 9:34:02 PM
I'm finally able to log in from an alternate Google account. Ugh. Anyway, it was great to hear Shocking Blue and Slade; I know both of the originals from childhood and never particularly liked the Bananarama and Quiet Riot covers, even though I liked Bananarama
Dana K (host) 9:35:40 PM
I think those versions are better too, Rob
john from FlorhamPark 9:35:47 PM
rob from maryland2 sorry to hear google is not playing nice
Colin 9:36:10 PM
rob, my coworkers don't know they are gonna be listening to bananararama tomorrow.
john from FlorhamPark 9:36:36 PM
Dana K hell of a show
Rob from Maryland2 9:37:06 PM
Hi Lizbot, I just logged back in. There's a place a few blocks from us where Chimney Swifts congregate in the fall on their way south. It is entertaining to watch them at dusk. The swifts I saw this week were flying around there late morning
Rob from Maryland2 9:38:44 PM
Colin, woo hoo!!
Rob from Maryland2 9:39:31 PM
john from FlorhamPark, yup. It's been going on for a couple of weeks for me, and not just on this station

ESO! 9:50:00 PM
i love him
Rob from merry land of pledges 🦅 9:50:23 PM
john, I wonder too
Colin 9:50:59 PM
lol, alex, i think i came around to kk when i saw him (the beard) in some 80's mini-series
Alex from Media 9:51:00 PM
I wonder if the reason I'm liking originals better is that there's generally less production going on.
Alan PaidUpNyk 9:51:01 PM
Dana & ESO: Y'all are full of Surprises Tonite Thanx!!
Dana K (host) 9:51:32 PM
I was thinking that too, Alex. There are a few originals I didn't play because I thought the cover was better - Respect comes to mind
Alex from Media 9:52:35 PM
@ Colin For me when I first heard "Nobody Wins" it was like. Yup KK speaks truth.
ESO! 9:53:08 PM
sure thing, alan!
Dana K (host) 9:53:49 PM

Alan PaidUpNyk 9:56:46 PM
Sometimes I think that with a really great track, it's all just variations with different voices.....can't pick the best really..
Alex from Media 9:57:54 PM
I won the 7 inch of this for participation in in a top 100 songs countdown that year. (got all of the 5 top songs)
Alan PaidUpNyk 9:58:05 PM
...tho it might be cool to electronically over lap the voices...hmmmm...
ESO! 9:58:40 PM
i see what you mean, alan
Rob from merry land of pledges 🦅 9:58:49 PM
Alex, how cool
Alex from Media 10:00:09 PM

I went to the weird VR 3D concert he recorded himself performing just before he died at The Shed in nyc and didn’t think I’d like the VR aspect, but it was actually really cool
Colin 10:09:56 PM
this song makes me notice my dusty unplayed game cube.
Liz Bot (1) 10:10:28 PM
@Dana K - it should be a really good weekend. Anna Meredith and Laurie Spiegel pieces as well
Liz Bot (1) 10:11:54 PM
Sakamoto did one of the most baller moves I can think of as a DJ: He hated the music his favorite restaurant in NYC always played, so he curated a mix of what he wanted to hear there for them, unasked, and they were flattered and switch to his playlists! If only we could just do that!
ESO! 10:13:16 PM
amazing, liz!
Tyler Blaetz 10:14:10 PM
Liz bot, I did that at a bar in my town. I keep a currently 38 hour playlist of wprb songs I thought were great/cool/so strange. Then I made a condensed 6 hr version if all the bangers, and now my neighborhood brewery plays it sometimes
Liz Bot (1) 10:14:15 PM
@ESO - Yeah, can you imagine?! I’d LOVE to do that!
ESO! 10:14:32 PM
totally!
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 10:15:12 PM
Woao, heya DJs Dana K Lizbot Esoterica and everyone! Great soundtrack for a drive home from philly
Tyler Blaetz 10:15:27 PM
It's on Spotify if anyone wants to share it. I've been keeping wprb finds in this playlist for more than a few years
yoni from wkdu 10:16:54 PM

ESO! 10:17:04 PM
yo TAndy!
ESO! 10:17:14 PM
agree, yoni!
Alex from Media 10:18:34 PM
@ Tyler I do too with WPRB and with several other streams as well. It's becoming a curation problem.
Colin 10:19:03 PM
tyler, 👀 i gotta a wprb find playlist as well! we need to make trade.
Liz Bot (1) 10:20:33 PM
Hey TAndy!
Colin 10:20:39 PM
liz, re: recording songs of the radio. shazam to streaming playist is the new modern radio tape? (less-static?)
Noëlle Burke 10:20:58 PM
Amazing song
Dana K (host) 10:21:38 PM
12 donations! Three to 15!
Liz Bot (1) 10:21:55 PM
@Tyler Blaetz - That’s awesome! And even better that it came from PRB playlists!
Noëlle Burke 10:22:39 PM
Oh wow- perfect follow up
ESO! 10:22:42 PM
liz what were the three record stores, siren was one, right?
Dana K (host) 10:23:01 PM
13!! Two more!!
Colin 10:24:10 PM
love this one! it's on my beach house playlist🤣
Steve Keane 10:24:14 PM
Everyone went to bed so now I can listen.
Liz Bot (1) 10:24:33 PM
Hi Colin! I guess in a way, though even more so just recording the station stream off a computer and editing together the songs you want in Logic, but that’s a lot of work! My old taped-off-the-radio tape mixes from the 80s & 90s have a lot of songs where the front is cut off from the few seconds it took to run to my tape deck and hit record,’and the ends often cut off or faded early for station IDs or ads
Liz Bot (1) 10:25:53 PM
@ESO - Siren was definitely the final one, and someone got that one. Tyler almost got it! I don’t know the others. It was Read and Cailyn. I know Cailyn et al were driving around dropping off the records yesterday while I was doing my show
Colin 10:26:05 PM
liz,🤣my whole life: oh so thats what the beginning of that song sounds like!
jimbooomonthlydonorooooOoO 10:26:16 PM
Old school mixtape swap gots to happen 📼

Liz Bot (1) 10:30:08 PM
@Colin - Ha! For real! I had other tape mixes I took VERY srsly once CD players became commonplace and cheap, made up of songs I taped off of CDs and tapes I already owned on my double tape-deck/CD player combo stereo, and for those I planned them out down to the second to not waste any space on the tape sides! That was THE most important part of planning for a road trip!
Liz Bot (1) 10:30:20 PM
@Tyler B - Whoa!
Liz Bot (1) 10:30:40 PM
@ESO - no prob!
jimbooomonthlydonorooooOoO 10:31:43 PM
Got dem dirty Dolby mixtapes
Alex from Media 10:31:49 PM
@ Lizbot. I have been doing the same mix thing for my european vacations. It gets so I flash back to my experiences when I hear any of the songs.
Colin 10:33:24 PM
i grew up in a dolby-free house hold. i can still hear the hiss
Liz Bot (1) 10:34:38 PM
Most of the 110 and 120 minute commercially available blank tapes were really low quality. You couldn’t usually get a good blank tape over 90 minutes in most stores, but I always wanted the maximum tape length, so I went to this small stereo equipment store in South Jersey near Cherry Hill…blanking on the name, this was back in the early 90s…but I think it was on Rte 70, and I’d stock on this high quality 120 min tapes they sold
jimbooomonthlydonorooooOoO 10:36:13 PM
Got dem TDK maxell certron Fuji casetttttttttttes
Valence Roffle 10:36:52 PM
Just couldn't deal with the jug handles to get there Liz Bot. :)
Liz Bot (1) 10:37:00 PM
@Alex from Media - Yeah, now I still make mixes road-trips and flights, but it doesn’t have that physical element of building the tape mix song by song and getting the segues just right, let alone the painstakingly small carefully drawn track list! Sometimes I squeezed tiny illustrations in the margins
Liz Bot (1) 10:37:13 PM
@Jimbooo - Noice!
Colin 10:37:18 PM
😍 track is amazing btw
Liz Bot (1) 10:38:06 PM
@Valence Roffle - haha, I don’t mind Jersey barriers and traffic circles cuz South Jersey is where I learned to drive! I was just used to it and thought everywhere else was like that when I was 16!
Dana K (host) 10:38:55 PM
I think the jughandle is an elegant way to turn left
Alex from Media 10:39:25 PM
@ Lizbot Uncanny how like the playlist right beside the chat with the little pictures....
Liz Bot (1) 10:39:49 PM
@Dana K - Precisely! Jersey = class!
Valence Roffle 10:39:50 PM
I have driven in so many places, but South Jersey is insane! And I grew up there mostly. LOL
Liz Bot (1) 10:40:25 PM
@Alex from Media - 🤔, never thought of that, but yeah!
Alan PaidUpNyk 10:41:09 PM

The cloverleaf left turn...that's hotttttttt
Liz Bot (1) 10:42:52 PM
@Valencd Roffle - I have no problem driving in Jersey or NYC, but I didn’t love driving in L.A., especially when it rained and people acted like rain meant the coming of the apocalypse and suddenly forgot how to drive!
Valence Roffle 10:42:57 PM
I really like the "elegant way to turn left" concept though Dana!
jimbooomonthlydonorooooOoO 10:43:08 PM
Take the jug handle to the roundabout to the cloverleaf and you're there
Dana K (host) 10:43:32 PM
LA drivers are peculiar
Liz Bot (1) 10:43:36 PM
@jimboo- clover leaves are purdy from above!
Valence Roffle 10:44:03 PM
I dunno Liz Bot The GW bridge at rush is not worth it.
Liz Bot (1) 10:44:35 PM
@jimboo - now thinking of Clover department store and its logo and hiding in its spinning clothes racks as a kid
jimbooomonthlydonorooooOoO 10:44:38 PM
Aliens will think roadways are our "art"
Valence Roffle 10:45:31 PM
In LA they don't even know where their windshield wiper switch is!
Liz Bot (1) 10:45:33 PM
@jimboo - maybe they aren’t wrong. JG Ballard would agree with them.
Colin 10:46:20 PM
*adds this banger to the beach house playlist.
Alan PaidUpNyk 10:46:20 PM
I worked in Corpus Christi, one day it rained and there was a 20 car pileup, resident said "That's normal"
Liz Bot (1) 10:47:16 PM
I cannot deal with driving in countries that drive on the left side, though. And the worst was in the Bahamas where my rental car was American, so the steering wheel was on the left, BUT they still drive on the left there as a vestige of British colonialism, so I was WAY too far left on the road
Liz Bot (1) 10:47:38 PM
@alan P - 😬
Steve Keane 10:47:56 PM
@lizbot Clover was great.
Alex from Media 10:48:19 PM
Great show, Thank you!
Liz Bot (1) 10:48:57 PM
@Valence Roffle - Yeah, I cannot deal with LA people in rain. I was there during a downpour and stores closed early and everyone freaked out and tried to drive home at the same time. Awful!
Colin 10:49:45 PM
radio gold tonight🤩
Liz Bot (1) 10:50:11 PM
@Steve Keane - a lotta my childhood clothes came from thrift stores, hand me downs and Clover, but I have a formative Clover traumatic memory of my mom leaving me there, briefly, when I was 6!
Colin 10:50:43 PM
and always remember, Radio boss cat says more tuna!
Rob from merry land of pledges 🦅 10:50:47 PM

I’m visiting family in Germany this summer and I cannot decide if I should attempt to have fun fun fun on the Autobahn or just take trains everywhere! I gotta get from Hamburg to Stuttgart! Not a short drive!
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 10:51:33 PM
Thanks for the show y'all!
ESO! 10:51:39 PM
thx everyone!
Liz Bot (1) 10:52:21 PM

Next up Music With Spaaace......................🛸 🪐
Valence Roffle 10:53:46 PM
@Liz, I hate the 405. That is the king between laurel canyon and anywhere south of messes for sure. I only went there between 2 and 4 in the morning when I could. Then it's nice and super open.
Valence Roffle 10:56:11 PM
NYC is a mess 24/7... lol Good Night folks!
Liz Bot (1) 10:56:44 PM
@Valence Roffle - Ugh. Yeah, the 405 is no good. It’s like planning to drive to another city going from one part of LA to another in heavy traffic! The drive to Palm Springs Easter weekend was epically terrible too!
Liz Bot (1) 10:57:09 PM
@Valence Roffle - At least they drive on the right side of the road in Germany, so there’s that!
Liz Bot (1) 10:57:23 PM
G’night everyone! Happy Drive-ing/chatting!
Valence Roffle 10:57:37 PM
True that! Correct side of the road!
Valence Roffle 10:59:43 PM
PS... 8 & hours from Thousand Oaks to Escondido. Good grief!
Valence Roffle 11:02:03 PM
THanks Dana and ESO!
