Phoebe Rees Take Back the Night Si Kahn
Bring in the Light: Si Kahn's Songs of Courage and Resistance Strictly Country 2024 Folk
Long-time organizer and musician Si Kahn asked Phoebe Rees to release her first full-length album, in celebration of his 80th birthday this April, and to carry his music forward long after he’s gone. She’s exactly the kind of person Si most likes to partner with: Deeply decent, with a strong sense of responsibility, and a lovely soft sense of humor.’ As the song says, “In the United States there’s a war against women.” But there’s a war against women everywhere in the world. From rape to honor killing, too many women are at daily risk of sexual violence, physical abuse, abandonment. “Take back the night” is one of the slogans created by women who have been fighting back together. Love Is the Devil Pork Chop Willie 2014 Americana QMTYJ1400004
‘The Pork Chop Willie band is the duo of Bill Hammer on guitar and vocals and Melissa Tong on fiddle and vocals. The music is Mississippi hill country music. Horn-rimmed glassed Manhattan-ite Hammer and classically trained Tong look like an unlikely duo to have the chemistry and authentic chops to produce an album in the style of Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, but they have done it in a big way.’

In an interview in 2016, Fogerty explained that “Run Through the Jungle” was a statement about gun control, not the Vietnam War. “The thing I wanted to talk about was gun control and the proliferation of guns.” It bothered him how people would use the Second Amendment to claim that they should own machine guns. “You don’t take a machine gun to go deer hunting,” he said. “There’s got to be some sort of lid on this thing.”

Joe Louis Walker - Too Drunk To Drive Drunk
Joe Louis Walker Too Drunk To Drive Drunk Walker\Russo
Hellfire MERLIN - Alligator Records 2012 Blues USARL1672813
Joe Louis Walker was born in San Francisco on Christmas Day, 1949. He was raised and schooled in the famed and dangerous Fillmore District. His parents were both from the South and they brought their love of blues with them when they headed west. Walker picked up the guitar as a child, and by the time he was 16, was an in-demand musician on the local club scene, regularly backing touring blues artists. The blues legends Walker accompanied shared not only musical knowledge but also their personal wisdom with the teenager. Blues icon Willie Dixon told him to set his sights high. "What's your style? You need your own sound," Dixon preached. Walker took the advice to heart and developed his own fiery, melodic and always unpredictable guitar attack.

Burning Bridget Cleary - Oh My Little Darling / Fire On the Mountain
Burning Bridget Cleary Oh My Little Darling / Fire On the Mountain Traditional
Pressed for Time Burning Bridget Cleary 2013 Folk USHM21335487
This great Celtic folk band from just north of Philadelphia, got their name from Bridget Cleary, who was an Irish woman killed by her husband in 1895. Her death is notable for one distinct peculiarity: the stated motive for the crime was her husband’s belief that she had been abducted by fairies with a changeling left in her place; he claimed to have slain only the changeling. Michael Cleary denied having murdered his wife, admitting only to having done away with her changeling. His so-called “fairy defense” did not hold up in court and he was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison. She was the last witch burned in Ireland. ‘A happy, carefree Old Timey song with a little chickin’ pickin’ guitar. Makes you want to sing along.’

Brothers and Sisters Capricorn 1973 Rock USPG19190006
Dickey Betts, singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band, died yesterday at the age of 80. The cause was cancer and COPD. As a singer and writer, Betts was responsible for the band’s biggest hit, 1973’s “Ramblin’ Man,” as well as some of their most recognizable songs, including this one. My uncle, who is 90, used to play golf with him in Florida. He didn’t know who Dickie Betts was until someone else told him!
