Mark Spoelstra - Sugar Babe

The Songs of Mark Spoelstra Folkways Records 1963 Folk USSF16344402
A singer-songwriter and folk / blues guitarist born and raised in Kansas City, MO, Spoelstra began his musical career in LA in his teens and wound up in New York City in time to take part in the folk music revival of the early 1960s. He is best remembered for his activity in the Greenwich Village area. He performed with Bob Dylan soon after Dylan's arrival there, was a contributor to Broadside, and recorded a number of albums for Folkways Records and other labels. Spoelstra was raised as a Quaker. His career was put on hold from 1963 to 1965, when he performed alternative service as a conscientious objector in Fresno, CA. In the mid-1960s, he frequently performed at the Ash Grove in West Hollywood. Spoelstra later settled near Modesto, CA, where he lived until his death in 2007.

Dolly Parton Southern Accents Tom Petty
Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration Of Tom Petty Big Machine Records 2024 Country QZRD92404583
This was the title song from Petty’s 1985 album. This song, about Southern roots and a down-on-his luck Florida orange-picker, was considered by Petty to be one of the best he ever wrote. Dolly does him proud. Album coming out on 6/21.

Johnny Shines - Joliet Blues
Johnny Shines Joliet Blues Johnny Shines
Drop Down Mama Geffen 1970 Blues USMC15007279
Shines played with Robert Johnson in the mid-1930s, then moved to Chicago. This song was first recorded there in 1950 but not released until 1970, 20 years later. A great example of early post-War Chicago blues. Shines on vocal and guitar; Little Walter on harp; Jimmy Rogers on guitar; and Ernest 'Big' Crawford playing bass.

Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams - Contraband Love
Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams Contraband Love Larry Campbell
Contraband Love Red House Records 2017 Americana USRHR1730304
Multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams’ musical and life experiences combine here for another great album on Red House Records. The husband/wife duo have worked with fellow artists including Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples, Little Feat, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Rosanne Cash. Some of the songs on this album deal with an addict’s effort to get clean. This track looks at it from the other side, when a loved one realizes their only recourse for dealing with an addict is merely to stand “with arms wide open.”

Noah and Nate Faulkner: Noah is 16, his brother Nate, on bass, is 13. ‘Using the handle Pedal Steel Noah, he posts daily covers of ’80s New Wave and post-punk hits on Instagram and TikTok, interpreting the work of acts like the Smiths and Tears for Fears on one of the hardest instruments to master.’ Noah’s mother says he “sang before he really talked. That’s his first language.” Last week, his first EP, “Texas Madness,” came out; it includes three covers and two original tracks. I find the videos addicting!

It all started when Trischka received a ‘mysterious thumb drive full of rare recordings of Earl Scruggs jamming with John Hartford, mostly taken from private gatherings at Earl’s house during the 80s and 90s.’ The upcoming album features a cross-generational, genre-spanning band.

William Lee Ellis - Call on Me (An Eidolon Air)
William Lee Ellis Call on Me (An Eidolon Air) William Lee Ellis; Julia Coffey, William Lee Ellis, Julia Coffey
Ghost Hymns Yellow Dog Records 2023 Folk USYDR2364306
For the curious, an ‘eidolon’ is a phantom, a ghost or elusive entity. Godson of bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe and son of lauded banjoist/composer Tony Ellis, Ellis grew up in Tennessee. Despite his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, Ellis is happy to let his roots show. There’s a casual, almost ramshackle air to the proceedings, as if it’s a gathering of friends more than an actual band. Julie Coffey on background vocal; Pete Sutherland on fiddle.

Ultimately, we just hold on and come to understand that life is a lonely mission which we share with others. The song is dedicated to Leonard Peltier, the Native American political prisoner.”
