| Marianne Faithfull Crazy Love Nick Cave Before the Poison BELIEVE - Naive 2004 Alternative From Faithfull’s 16th studio album, which has a dark and fatalistic mood; Faithfull attributes that partially to the post-9/11 world. Nick Cave co-wrote this song, and his supporting band, The Bad Seeds, provide accompaniment. Said a reviewer, ‘Faithfull imbues every song and every word on ‘Before the Poison’ with the weight of experience, as if age has granted her almost oracular powers. This may not be a perfect album, but it is affecting and haunting.’

| Shirley Collins & Davy Graham Jane, Jane Traditional Folk Roots, New Routes Decca 1964 Folk ‘For many in this postmodern era, it might be difficult to appreciate how radical the pairing of Shirley Collins and Davy Graham was in 1964 when this album was released. The former was practically the living embodiment of the traditional British Isles folk music movement at the time, while the latter was a musician's musician of formidable instrumental talent who was just as adept at playing prewar blues or jazz and Middle Eastern music.’ A ‘Southern traditional, first captured as “Jane-Jane (Three Mocking Birds)” in a field recording by a singer named Lila May Stevens in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1939,’ Shirley learned this from Peggy Seeger.

| Son House Depot Blues Son House Delta Blues UMG - Shout Factory 1991 Blues This album contains the Original Library of Congress Sessions from Field Recordings 1941-1942, recorded by Alan Lomax. Son House “was the most intense person I ever worked with,” said Dick Waterman. “I never sensed Son House was a paid entertainer. He brought total commitment, played the same for 15 people, 1,500 people, or 15,000 people. He’d say, ‘This is just a little old piece of blues and I hope you like it,’ and then he’d unleash it and it was like being under a waterfall. He’d start to play, his eyes would roll back in his head, the sweat would roll out on his face and he’d just go somewhere else, some other place in time.”

| Randy Newman Birmingham - Remastered Randy Newman Good Old Boys Rhino/Warner Bros. 1974 Americana ‘This song sounds like an autobiographical tribute to the city of his birth, but Newman was born in LA and spent his childhood oscillating between Los Angeles and New Orleans. In this song, he assumes the character of an Alabama steel mill worker who oozes pride in his Birmingham heritage.’ A reviewer described this and the other songs on the album as "heavily critical studies of trash, loonies, drunks, dirty politicians, and bigots.”

| Glen Campbell Guess I'm Dumb Russ Titelman, Brian Douglas Wilson Rhinestone Cowboy - The Best Of Glen Campbell UMG - CMCapNash (N91) 2003 The song was originally intended to be recorded by Wilson's band, the Beach Boys, during the sessions for their album ‘The Beach Boys Today!’ Wilson's bandmates rejected the track (‘maybe it was just the idea of being “dumb”’), so he ultimately produced it for Campbell, who had recently been hired as an emergency fill-in for Wilson on the group's concert tours. Said musicologist Philip Lambert, ‘the song is so difficult to sing. The near-octave leaps at the ends of the first two phrases (on "like me" and "to be") ... emerges as one aspect of [Wilson's] movement toward novelty and innovation in late 1964.’ Difficult to sing, but Campbell nails it!
