“Hawk Squat was born at Turner’s Lounge at 39th and Indiana, on Chicago’s South Side. Fifty cents would gain you entry and a beer. Caroline Spence - Long Haul
Caroline Spence Long Haul Caroline Spence
Mint Condition Rounder 2019 Americana USRO21801497
“Long Haul” delineates the many demands of the musician’s life, including the self-sabotage often required in sustaining passion (“I keep breaking everything I’m fixing, so I can be fixing to do it tomorrow night”). “That song’s equal parts pep talk and confession, where I’m so determined to keep going with this way of life but I’m also recognizing how insane that is,” Spence says.

Primitive Dance Peebee Music 1987 Rock GBBJU9900033
Paul’s last album recorded in the UK before moving to the States. (He’s back in Ireland again.) Brady was born in Strabane, Northern Ireland. He started out doing traditional Irish music, but also was composing. He eventually went solo, and branched out to rock and contemporary folk. He sees song-writing as a sort of holy covenant between him and the listener. Bob Dylan once said that Paul Brady was “one of the five artists worth getting out of bed for…[They’re] ”not just witchdoctoring up the planet, they don't set up barriers.” Brady says he’s always been ‘more interested in music than in getting noticed.’

Janiva Magness - Thought I Knew You
Janiva Magness Thought I Knew You Matthew Sweet
Stronger For It Alligator Records 2012 Rock USARL1294609
‘Born in Detroit, Magness was inspired by the blues and country she heard listening to her father’s record collection, and by the vibrant music of the city’s classic Motown sound. By her teenage years, though, her life was in chaos. She lost both parents to suicide by the age of 16 and lived on the streets, bouncing from one foster home to another. At 17, she became a teenage mother who had to give up her baby daughter for adoption. One night in Minneapolis, an underage Magness sneaked into a club to see blues great Otis Rush, and it was there that she found her salvation and discovered that the blues were her calling.’ She followed that Muse, and we’re all better for it!
